In Fla. town, houseplants groomed for real world

APOPKA, Fla. - When people think of Florida farming, they think of oranges. In Apopka, however, the cash crop is houseplants - millions of them. In fact, some of the ones in your living room probably came from this small city in the flat sunny heart of Florida that produces almost half the country's indoor foliage plants, just down the road from Orlando and the Kingdom of Disney.

Birds: Sunflower hulls can release toxins into the soil that could harm nearby plantings so occasionally clean up fallen hulls under birdfeeders or use hulled sunflower seeds in feeders.

Amaryllis: Place one bulb in a pot only slightly larger than the bulb, and make sure the bulb sticks up out of the soil an inch. Water once, and then wait till greenery sprouts before watering again.

This time of year is one long series of special events that invite floral decorations. How ironic that it arrives just as our cutting gardens go dormant! Why isn't there a series of special holidays in May, when the backyard is full of flowering boughs and bulbs?
