When I picked up my daughter Hannah at the airport and drove her home to Durham for Thanksgiving in 1984, I kept hearing the name Michael, and when we got home I took Minnie Mae aside and said, ''It looks like we have a Michael in the family.''

It is siesta time, but I choose to walk the empty streets of Donaldi, Tuscany, envisioning the lives of the people in cool, dark rooms behind the shuttered windows. I keep returning to this imaginary hill town in Italy, drawn by the beauty, the mystery, and, yes, the food and wine.

One of the many delights of writing this column is the accidental meeting with readers in a supermarket, bookstore, restaurant, or at a University of New Hampshire hockey game. They usually ask the same questions: ''Where do you get your ideas week after week?'' ''How do you write the column?''
