The war against Israel goes on
(12/2/2001)
First of two parts LAST WEEK retired Marine General Anthony Zinni began a visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the latest in a depressingly long line of US envoys sent to nudge along the Israeli-Arab ''peace process.'' Zinni's mission, it seems safe to say, will achieve what all the missions preceding his have achieved; namely, nothing - or at least nothing resembling progress toward real peace.

Bikers demand their 'civil' rights
(11/29/2001)
THE DEBATE RAGES over military tribunals, which President Bush has authorized for trying suspected foreign terrorists. Such trials would deny due-process protections we normally take for granted - trial by jury, strict rules of evidence, appeals - which is why many civil libertarians so strongly oppose them.

Gratitude is the key to happiness
(11/22/2001)
ASK YOURSELF THIS as you sit down to your turkey dinner: If you had been a Pilgrim, would you have given thanks?

Facing the truth about the Saudis
(11/18/2001)
TO HEAR Prince Bandar tell it, Saudi Arabia is devoted to the United States.

Facing the truth about the Saudis
(11/15/2001)
ONE OF THE PUB regulars launches into a joke. ''Say,'' he says to the fellow on the next stool, ''did you hear the one about the dumb state legislator who tried to kill a tax cut?''

Will they kill the tax cut?

Monopolists behind bars
(11/11/2001)
IF NOTHING ELSE, the Microsoft case showed how ferocious federal prosecutors can be in fighting monopolistic predators. Let a company stifle competition or block other companies' access to customers, and odds are the Justice Department will come after it hammer and tongs.

...The voices of Islam's moderates
(11/8/2001)
SEVEN WEEKS after Sept. 11, the Muslim Public Affairs Council finally condemned Osama bin Laden as a terrorist. Sort of.

Why CPA is a bad idea
(11/4/2001)
THE WORST THING about the Community Preservation Act isn't that it raises taxes at the start of a recession, the worst possible time. It isn't that it will kill jobs. It isn't that it carves a gaping hole in Proposition 21/2, the bedrock tax-limitation law that has protected Massachusetts taxpayers for 20 years. It isn't that it incoherently promotes two goals - increased housing and increased open space - that are mutually exclusive.
