HIT OF THE WEEK

Food lover's guide

By Denise Taylor, Globe Staff, 11/29/2001

One way to explore the many ethnic foods in our city is with a friend in the know. With her new book, "Boston Neighborhoods: A Food Lover's Walking, Eating, and Shopping Guide to Ethnic Enclaves in and around Boston," former Calendar contributor Lynda Morgenroth is that knowledgeable pal.

Morgenroth leads readers through 13 local neighborhoods, pointing out history and landmarks. More importantly, she tells us which Irish bakery in Dorchester makes "divine-tasting scones" and which Portuguese restaurant in Cambridge makes a creamy potato bisque so comforting that her friend calls it "antidepressant soup." She navigates the maze of Chinatown right down to which dish on a 240-item menu is a sure bet (like Yu Siang eggplant with "crescents of garlic, and luscious, dark oily sauce").

For cooks, the scoop on good fish markets, unusual ingredients, and the occasional recipe can help bring the wealth of the world's cuisines home.

Published by Globe Pequot Press, 2001. $15.95. At Brookline Booksmith on Harvard Street, Wordsworth in Harvard Square, Barnes and Noble downtown, elsewhere.

Hit of the Week highlights an item that's new or noteworthy.
