Written and Oral Communications Requirement

What courses satisfy the Computer Science Department's Written and Oral Communications requirement?

Computer Science majors are required to take a writing course beyond College Writing I (42.101) and College Writing II (42.102).  For students who had not satisfied the requirement by fall of 1997, the requirement can only be satisfied by

• 42.220 Communications for Software Developers

For the fall of 1997 and earlier, students could satisfy the requirement with any one of the following:

• 42.225 Basic Technical Writing
• 42.226 Technical & Scientific Communication
• 42.229 Essay Writing for Non-English majors

Such students who already were competent writers in English could instead take one of the following:

• 42.300 Journalism I
• 42.306 Professional Writing

These two courses (42.300 and 42.306) required the approval of either the instructor or the English Dep’t. Chairperson.

Other writing courses could be used to satisfy the CS Dept.’s requirement for writing elective with the approval of

• the Computer Science Dept.’s Chairperson or Undergraduate Coordinator and
• the instructor of the course or the English Dep’t. Chairperson
